Basic Skills Support Year 7 and 8

Basic Skills Support are Nurture groups that draw on primary techniques to offer extra support to students with literacy, numeracy and social needs. They offer students targetted support in which they can achieve not only educationally but also emotionally, thus raising self-esteem. Group sizes vary between four and six persons.

Targetted support for statemented pupils

All pupils with statements have a Key Worker at the Ridings School. The Key Worker will support them in a range of subjects according to their statemented needs. They will also provide a point of contact for all parents, support agencies and staff.

COMPASS

What is the Compass Centre?

The Compass Centre is an integral part of the school's approach to learning and behaviour support. It provides separate short-term teaching and support programmes tailored to meet the needs of carefully selected students who may have any number, or combination of disadvantages or personal challenges.

The Compass Centre will endeavour to keep disaffected students in school and working while it addresses their needs, facilitating re-integration into mainstream as quickly as possible.

Parents and staff all view the Compass Centre as a place for rigorous learning that supports students, raises their self-esteem and motivation in a positive and supportive atmosphere.

We are currently developing a similar facility for our Key Stage 4 students in years 10 and 11. The focus here will be in preparartion for working life with basic skills and vocational qualifications.
